Brenda Kluger, Iowa Council Director, Speaks About Teamwork
Iowa Council Director Brenda Kluger, MBA, CIC, CISR, CPIW, DAE, was the speaker at IAGDM’s monthly meeting held September 12, 2007. Brenda’s presentation emphasized Teamwork and NAIW. Some of the points of her presentation included:
- Part of what makes NAIW so wonderful is the diversity of its members.
- Teamwork is the ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organized objectives. In order for teamwork to succeed within NAIW we all must begin to think and act like a team.
- “You Are The Most Essential Piece.” Working together to make a collective whole out of each piece is the basis for teamwork. You must work with your fellow NAIW members to ensure that NAIW continues to be “The Association of Choice” among professionals like yourself.
- Working with others on the local, council, regional and international levels of NAIW is a great way to learn the basics of what it REALLY means to be on a team and work with others who may have different ideas and backgrounds.
- The leadership skills that are necessary to both lead and be a part of a team are skills that can be learned as a member of NAIW. Educational programs such as Communicate With Confidence, Leadership Development and Leadership Savvy are just some of the many programs that NAIW offers its members which enable them to develop their personal and professional skills.
- Teamwork is more about cooperation than it is about competition. If our true intentions are to create a better association and thus a better industry, then we will all win.
- As a part of a team, you must look at change from the perspective of the group as a whole. Change is essential to innovation. When change is made through teamwork, everyone is able to feel as though they have contributed to the outcome.
- It is the teamwork and dedication of the members who have come before you that has made NAIW what it is. The responsibility now lies in your hands to continue making a name for NAIW.
Brenda also brought IAGDM members up to date with some of the things that are happening at the council, regional and international levels.
- The Pinnacle Award has been discontinued because of lack of participation. The format can still be used to help associations identify areas where they may need to concentrate some efforts.
- There will not be any Advisory Committees at the international level this year.
- No awards will be presented at the Council level. It has caused too much confusion in some states.
- Awards have been added at the local, regional and international levels for Professional Underwriter of the Year and Risk Manager of the Year.
- We will work to develop a Horizon Plan for Iowa at the Council meeting in October.
- Candidates are needed to run for the council offices.
Brenda Kluger has been a member of NAIW since 1994. She joined as a founding member of the Hoosier Insurance Association in Bloomington, IN. Upon moving to Des Moines in 2001, she transferred her membership to the Insurance Association of Greater Des Moines. At both Associations, she served Secretary, Vice-President, President-Elect and President. Over her years with NAIW she has served and chaired many Committees at the Local, State and Regional levels. She has also attended many of NAIW-developed courses and has presented some courses and I Can presentations.
Brenda was elected as Iowa Council Director-Elect at the meeting held in Des Moines last October. She assumed the duties of Iowa Council Director on July 1, 2007.
