Region V Conference - April 2-4, 2009

President’s report on the 2009 Regional Conference – April 2-4, Bloomington, MN

 

IAGDM Members in attendance:  Michele Sparks (President), Des Meyer (President Elect), Brenda Kluger, Tonia Jones (First Timer), Robin Wagner, Paula Dishman, Eileen Bleskacek, Elaine Slate, Marilyn Paul, Jennie LeGates, & Nancy Thompson.

 

THURSDAY:

The conference began with Thursday afternoon registration and Hospitality Room.  Phyllis Gogel’s (Region V Vice President) employer, AEGON, sponsored a Mix & Mingle held at the Mall of America.  The First Timers meeting was also held at this location following the Mix & Mingle.

 

Later everyone went back to the hotel for Committee meetings, and CWC Rehearsal.

 

FRIDAY:

Friday began with exhibitors and educational sessions.

The sessions included:

  • Ethics – Making A Difference: Ethics and the Insurance Professional – instructed by our own Jennie LeGates.
  • Robert’s Rules of How to Hold a Successful Meeting – instructed by Mary Erwin, and our own Robin Wagner.

 

Following a Flower Pot lunch the first business session began.  The first session included the CWC speak off with speakers from IA, MN, MO, SD, & WI.  In between the speeches the Council Directors gave their reports.

 

Following the afternoon session Phyllis held the Delegates Briefing & Meet the Candidates.   During this meeting there was discussion regarding the proposed Region V Standing Rules and the Award Fund Rules.  There was some discussion and amendments made to be presented in the Saturday morning business session.

 

Friday evening after the Young Professionals Reception – the Welcome Party began.  “Back to the 50’s and other Eras”.  There was good food, fun, & fellowship.  And as at all Regional conferences – lots of dancing!!

 

SATURDAY:

Saturday morning’s business session began with the adoption on the amended Standing Rules and amended Award Fund Rules.  After some discussion it was agreed that these would help to put things in writing that have been “customary” to Region V.

 

The Keynote Speaker – Jill Spiegel of Goal Getters, spoke on “How to Talk to Anyone about Anything”.  She was very inspirational and was able to get the entire membership involved in her examples and experiences.

 

The Nominating Committee presented the nominations for the 2009-10 Region V offices.

The election for the 2009-10 Region V officers was held:  Regional VP – Brenda McDermott (Kansas City), Delegate to the Int’l Nominating Comm – Fran Schultz (WI), and Alternate Delegate to the Int’l Nominating Comm – Joyce Nelson (IA).

 

Janelle Duffy (NAIW International President was the International representative at the Regional meeting.  She gave a report on the activities at National on Friday and then on Saturday offered the invitation to the International meeting in New Orleans.

 

There were confirmations for future Regional Meetings:

2010 – Wisconsin Council – March 25-28th

2011 – Illinois Council – April 7-10th

2012 – Missouri Council – Embassy Suites (Kansas City)

2013 – Iowa Council – details to follow

 

After the raffles and other announcements – the business session was adjourned.

 

The Recognition Luncheon was conducted by Shelia Griffith.  They recognized the following during this luncheon:

  • new CPIW/CPIM and DAE recipients
  • First Timers (including our own Tonia Jones)
  • Maggie O’Toole Mentors & Protégé recipients (including our own Tonia Jones)
  • 25+ years of membership
  • Local Presidents/Council Directors/& past RVP’s

 

Following this luncheon the members were given several hours of free time to enjoy the local attractions including the Mall of America which was only 4 blocks away!

 

Saturday evening was the Awards Banquet dinner.  Iowa was the recipient of the Rookie of the Year – Robin Railsback (Cedar Rapids).  Robin will also be representing Iowa and Region V at National as the winner of the CWC competition.
